Lemuel Searles Hart (1831-1914)[1]Find A Grave, “Lemuel Searles Hart,” Memorial ID 128422574, accessed October 2, 2021 was a carpenter who lived in northeastern Ohio in the 1800s and early 1900s.

Biography

Early life

Lemuel Searles Hart was born on January 25, 1831 in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.[2]“Ohio Deaths, 1908-1953,” database with images, Lemuel S. Hart, January 5, 1914, Orwell Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio, file number 200, FamilySearch, accessed March 4, 2022 His parents were Randal Hart (1783-1850)[3]Find A Grave, “Randal Hart,” Memorial ID 82781293, accessed March 8, 2022 and Letice Searles (1788-1854)[4]Find A Grave, “Letice Hart,” Memorial ID 82781288, accessed March 8, 2022.

On November 15, 1830–two months before Lemuel’s birth–Randal Hart purchased 465 acres of land in lots 7 and 8 of Montville Township, Geauga County, Ohio from fellow Westfield resident Charles Douglass. It seems unlikely that Randal would have departed for Ohio so late in the year with a baby on the way, so it is probable that he was in Westfield for Lemuel’s birth. The deed was recorded in Geauga County on October 19, 1831, so the Hart family may have relocated to their new land sometime before then.[5]Geauga County (Ohio) Recorder, Geauga County Deeds, Book 14, pages 593-594, Randal Hart land purchase from Charles Douglass, recorded October 19, 1831, FamilySearch, accessed March 9, 2022 Hart Road, an east-west road in north-central Montville Township, is named for this Hart family.

After moving to Geauga County, the Harts farmed. The 1840 United States Census lists Randal as an agricultural worker in a household with his wife and four children.[6]“United States Census, 1840,” Montville Township, Geauga County, Ohio, page 118 (stamped), Randall Hart, FamilySearch, accessed March 10, 2022

The 1850 United States Census lists a 19 year-old Lemuel Hart in the household of his brother, Randal Hart, Jr., in Montville. Lemuel was listed as a farmer and Randal was listed as a carpenter.[7]“United States Census, 1850,” Montville Township, Geauga County, Ohio, population schedule, page 201 (stamped), dwelling 17, family 17, Lemuel Hart, FamilySearch, accessed March 11, 2022 Perhaps Lemuel picked up the carpentry trade from his brother, as he is listed as a carpenter in subsequent census records.

Marriage

On April 1, 1855, Lemuel married Lydia M. Gould in Geauga County.[8]“Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2016,” database with images, Geauga County, Ohio, volume E (1852-1863), page 145, Lemuel S. Hart and Lydia M. Gould, April 1, 1855, FamilySearch, accessed … Continue reading Lydia (1834-1882)[9]Find A Grave, “Lydia M Gould Hart,” Memorial ID 128424395, accessed March 3, 2022 was a native of Vermont. She came to Ohio with her parents, Thomas Gould and Rebecca Packer, in the mid-1830s.

In Lake County, Ohio

A month and a half after their wedding, the Harts made their first land purchase in Lake County, Ohio–on May 24, 1855, they purchased just over an acre of land in Painesville Township.[10]Lake County (Ohio) Recorder, Lake County Deeds, Volume L, pages 431-432, L. S. Hart land purchase from Homer Higley, date of deed May 24, 1855, FamilySearch, accessed March 17, 2022 The 1860 United States Census lists the Harts (Lemuel, Lydia, and their eldest son, Wilfred) in Painesville. Lemuel–or “Elmore,” as he was listed in the census–was a carpenter. They had $1000 in real estate and $200 in personal estate.[11]“United States Census, 1860,” Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, population schedule, page 169 (penned), page 425 (stamped), dwelling 1342, family 1321, Elmore Hart, FamilySearch, accessed … Continue reading

In Cuyahoga County, Ohio

By 1865, the Harts were living in Cleveland. The 1865 Cleveland city directory lists Lemuel Hart as a melodeon maker, living at 163 Kinsman.[12]Cleveland Leader City Directory, For 1865-66 (Cleveland: E. Cowles & Co., 1865), page 139, HeritageQuest, accessed March 11, 2022 Melodeons were a type of reed pump organ that was popular in the 19th century. Cleveland had multiple melodeon manufacturers at the time.

The next two censuses list the Harts in Cuyahoga County. The 1870 United States Census lists the Harts (Lemuel, Lydia, and their eldest son, Wilfred) in East Cleveland. Lemuel was a carpenter and joiner at the time. The Harts had $4000 in real estate, but no personal estate was noted.[13]“United States Census, 1870,” East Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, population schedule, page 39 (penned), page 279 (stamped), dwelling 296, family 292, Lemuel S. Hart, FamilySearch, … Continue reading The 1880 United States Census lists the Harts (Lemuel, Lydia, and two sons–Wilfred and Jay) at 757 Ansel Avenue in Cleveland.
