Capt. Gilbert was sent to Quobaug (Brookfield) in command of men to the relief of the people there and as an escort to them while making their fortification there. He took a house lot adjoining the fort and removed there from Springfield with his brother Thomas. He was a Deacon and very prominent. A monument has been erected by the Quobaug Historical Society on the site of the fort in West Brookfield.
